Peloton’s health expert has a diagnosis on why ‘Mr Big’ died

The saddening death of “Mr Big” had nothing to do with Peloton’s exercise bike, says Dr Suzanne Steinbaum of Peloton Interactive Inc’s (NASDAQ: PTON) health and wellness advisory council.

She was responding to a scene from episode one of “And Just Like That” on HBO Max where veteran actor Chris Noth’s character that goes by “Mr Big” met with a fatal heart attack after his 1000th ride on the Peloton exercise bike.

The TV show is a reboot of the 90s famous “Sex and the City”.  Interestingly, shares of Peloton closed down more than 11% on Thursday.

Peloton Bike can delay cardiac events

In her statement to the Los Angeles Times, Dr Steinbaum said exercise could delay cardiac events even for those at the highest risk of one.

Mr Big lived an extravagant lifestyle of cocktails, cigars, and big steaks and was at serious risk as he had a previous cardiac event in season 6. These lifestyle choices and his family history were the likely cause of his death. Riding his Peloton Bike may have even helped delay his cardiac event.

Last month, Peloton reported weak results for Q1 and gave downbeat future guidance.

How Peloton makes it safer to workout?

Even on the show, Mr Big had received an A-OK from his cardiologist to workout. According to Peloton’s health expert, changes to exercise regimes, diet, and overall lifestyle could prevent over 80% of deaths related to cardiac events.

While 25% of heart attacks each year are in patients who already had one, they’re still very treatable. The lesson here is, KNOW YOUR NUMBERS! Talk to your doctor, get tested, and have a healthy prevention strategy. The good news is Peloton helps you track heart rate, so you can workout safely.

The $13.26 billion company is now down more than 70% on a year-to-date basis.
